Hello! I’d like to share the story of my dear rabbit friend, Edwina, with you. Sadly, Edwina passed away earlier this year, but she enriched my life in so many ways through her special presence.
In the beginning, I was in a park, practicing with a drum I had made. While drumming, I had asked to meet the Spirit of my drum, a shamanic practice I had learned about. I didn’t receive any visualisations in my mediation, but when I stopped drumming I heard a loud commotion in the bushes behind me, and to my amazement a small rabbit hopped out of the bushes. She sat on my drum and looked at me. That was my first introduction, and how she became my pet.
There was perfect synchronicity and timing to the events leading up to our meeting. It transpired that she had escaped from the garden of the previous owners, and they no longer wanted her. It was clear that she had chosen me as her new owner. It came as a surprise to suddenly have a new pet, but she was a gift, and she came at an important time in my life.
Rabbits make great pets! They are exceptionally clean, and people are often surprised to hear that they can easily be toilet trained. When I was at home, Edwina roamed around the house, and she used a litter tray. It isn’t hard to toilet train a rabbit, it’s innate within them to go to the toilet in the same place. In nature, rabbits choose the same place to go to the toilet, away from their burrow. This prevents predators from detecting their odour and tracking them to their dwelling. They also groom themselves constantly, which is also to prevent predators from detecting their scent.
When Edwina was especially happy, she zoomed around the house and did agile wiggles and jumps, called “binkies”. She would usually run to me when I called her, unless she was up to mischief…
The main downside to letting a pet bunny roam around inside the house is that they love to chew! It’s a physical requirement because their front teeth, the incisors, grow constantly. They need to chew on grass and sticks to wear their teeth down and prevent them from growing too long. This means that the house needs to be bunny-proofed and electrical cords need to be protected. I’ve lost count of the number of phone charger cables I’ve had to replace because of rabbit-nibbling-antics!
Like most rabbits, Edwina loved being patted and scratched behind the ears. When I patted her, she went into a kind of blissful trance. Just like a cat, she would sometimes jump up onto the chair and sit on my lap; she would nudge my hand gently, expecting to be patted. And just like a dog, in the evening she enjoyed laying down beside my feet. Edwina was an observer, she would often sit and watch me in the evenings, she also liked to watch the dialogue between people and was very interested in the things they were doing.
In the evening, I would place Edwina back in her enclosure. She was very co-operative, and she didn’t struggle when she was being picked up, but she had such a delicate, tiny body, and I could sense that she felt slightly uncomfortable being lifted. As a result, we came to an agreement… When I placed a cat carrier on the floor next to her, it meant that it was time to return to her home, and she happily hopped inside. Conversely, when it was time to roam around the house I placed the carrier at the entrance of her (elevated) hutch for her to hop inside and be lifted down onto the floor.
When Edwina passed away, I felt so much grief and sadness. I knew that, just like humans, animals have a soul which is eternal, and I knew that I would be reunited with her again in spirit, but it was still hard losing her. I missed connecting with her little bunny form, patting her soft grey fur, and watching her delightful bunny antics. So it took some time to adjust, but as space and time are an illusion, there are imprints of her presence around my home that I can often feel, and I’ll always treasure the memory of her.
I have shared other human to human lifetimes with Edwina. Being in human form takes a special mastery, but it also takes mastery to exist in each creature form. Edwina’s soul has chosen lifetimes in both creature and human form. Many pet owners would be surprised to learn that in other lifetimes, their roles have been reversed, and that they have been the pet to their current pet!
Thanks for reading my story about how Edwina impacted my life, and the blessings she brought to me! Would you like to share a story or insight about a special pet or animal in your life? Please feel free to leave a comment below.
Until next time, sending love and Sacred Earth blessings!
